It seems to be true in most areas of aesthetic judgement that what is good is good forever. Hardcore may have left behind the dominant stylistic conventions of the early to mid 2000’s, but a revisitation of the best records from that era reveal them to be no less effective and arresting than they were ten years ago. Drei Affen have clearly understood what made that moment work so well, and if you told me that this record came out of Amherst, MA circa 2006 I’d believe it in a heartbeat. The guitars are a duelling bandsaw of melodic fury. And they know exactly when to halt the chaos with stretches of quieter, subtler passages. They’ve been listening to the Clean Plate and Ebullition catalogs, and you can bet they’ve been taking notes.
